Green Energy and Heat Pumps

Use of Heat Pumps for Heating: Reliable & Very Economical Operation

It is now clear throughout the technical world that the use of heat pumps for heating in winter is the most economical heating solution for residential and commercial premises.

The rise in the price of oil and the increasing pollution of the environment from combustion (especially in an urban environment that is highly burdened with pollutants) force a review of the conventional way of heating buildings and the choice of solutions that save energy & resources from the environment.

The reason that heating using heat pumps is significantly more economical than conventional combustion heating is due to the extraction of heat from the external environment.

But why have heat pumps been combined with green energy and are subsidized in many European countries?

The electrical energy consumed is not converted into heat, (as with electric heaters) but is used to drive an electric compressor and pump heat from & to the environment.

The ratio of pumped thermal energy to absorbed electrical energy, i.e. the degree of efficiency COP (Coefficient of performance) in modern heat pumps ranges from 2.5 to 5, depending on the technology used (Inverter – hi-efficiency heat exchangers – control ) & ambient temperatures.

Our country is located in a geographical area where heating through heat extraction can fully cover the heating needs of 3/4 of the population (Central & Southern Greece _ Geographical Zones A & B). In some areas in Northern Greece, the combination of a heat pump with backup energy (usually electric) is used, which in extreme climatic conditions, which are usually 5-20 days a year, (depending on the area) gives us the additional energy but also the confidence that and in the most adverse conditions our system will fully cope.

In order to quantify the economics of using heat pumps, let's look at the example of the first table regarding the average residence in Greece, with an area of 90 square meters. meters and thermal losses of 10 kW

We notice that with the use of heat pumps for heating we save up to 64% compared to a conventional oil-fired boiler room!!
